The first report came from La Nación, a major Argentine newspaper, which stated that the 31-year-old British singer tragically fell from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires. ABC News later confirmed this information, referencing local law enforcement. Yahoo Entertainment has reached out to Payne’s representative for further comment.
According to the Associated Press, Alberto Crescenti, head of the state’s emergency medical services, informed a local news station that Payne was discovered unresponsive in the courtyard of the Casa Sur Hotel. Authorities have yet to clarify if the fall was accidental or intentional. TMZ has reported that several witnesses observed the incident.
Payne was recently photographed attending a concert by his former bandmate Niall Horan in Argentina on October 2. In addition, videos of Payne in the country have surfaced in recent days.
Liam Payne first gained fame in 2010 when he appeared on The X Factor UK and was placed in the boyband One Direction, alongside Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Horan. The group disbanded in 2015.
Payne is survived by his 7-year-old son, whom he shares with singer Cheryl Cole.
